Before using it live: what needs a person
Everything here needs hands, hardware or a room; what a Mac could check on its own has been (see PROJECT.md: APP-I5, EDIT-I5, SET-I10, DESIGN-I4). Each item says what to do, what to look for, and the tracker ID to update with the result.
Build the app first: SIGN_ID=- scripts/package-macos.sh (ad-hoc signed,
fine on this Mac), then open build/StageDisplay.app.
On the Mac, five minutes
- Drag a song in (SET-I1). Drag a
.vctfrom Finder onto the home screen. It should appear in SONGS. Drag one onto the Dock icon with the app closed: it should open on the pre-play screen. - Drop a font on the theme editor (DESIGN). Open one of your themes
(T, THEMES, Enter), select a font row (FONTS → bold), drag a
.ttfor.otfonto the window: the row should show the file and the preview change. - The layout editor's other handles and cursors (DESIGN-I4). Resize a box from each edge and corner, not just the bottom right; the pointer should change to the matching arrows over each. Drag the theme editor's S and V sliders.
- A new song's track (EDIT-I5). Write a new song (N), choose a track with CHOOSE… before saving, then save next to it: the AUDIO field keeps the full path (known; worth knowing before it bites).
With a second screen or a projector
- Stage displays (DISP-I4, DISP-I10). Plug in the second screen,
press D on the home screen, turn it on. Check:
- the stage goes full screen there, and this Mac's window keeps the keyboard;
- Shift + its number, and a click on its layout chip, change its layout;
- with "Displays have separate Spaces" (System Settings → Desktop & Dock → Mission Control) on, and again off;
- unplugging it while a song plays: the song carries on here.
- Readable at a distance (DISP-Q1). Play a song on the projector and
read it from where the band stands, in
stage,focusandsingers. Note anything too small to read; a layout of your own (T) can fix it.
With the Launchkey Mini MK3
- Buttons and pads (feature 10; "not yet run against the
hardware"). Plug it in, start the player with
--midi-logfrom a terminal (build/StageDisplay.app/Contents/MacOS/StageDisplay --midi-log) and check, as the log shows each message:- it switches to DAW mode on start, and off on quit;
- Play starts, pauses and restarts a section; Track left/right change song; Scene up/down move on;
- in session layout, the pads light with the set's songs on the pre-play
screen and with the song's sections on the stage, and a press goes there.
If a button does nothing, its number is in the log: put it in
midi.txtin the library folder.
In rehearsal, with the band's phones
- Phones following (SYNC-I10). Start the player, show the phone link (Q), and scan it on two or three phones. Check that they keep time with the stage, that one given host permission (H lists the connected screens; a phone's number there gives it HOST) can start and skip, and that the others can't.
- A whole run ("Next up" in PROJECT.md). Play a set through with the projector, the click and the phones together, as on a Sunday, and note anything that got in the way.
